How do each of us plan out their day? What dictates where we go? What we do? and how we look back on the time we spend? Several tools like to-do lists and Gmail calendars are pretty much the starting point. Then the flow of Emails, text messages, and invites throughout the day usually fill in the little spaces we have left.

I like the idea of to-do lists, short ones, three or four things at most, they are a good reminder of the things we need to get done, but how related are those to-do lists with a list that I believe is far more important, a list of the things that matter most. I wonder how many of us actually take the time to reflect on our values, who we are, and what truly matters to us when we write down our daily to do lists. I know it’s some heavy thinking to do first thing in the morning, but I believe it can be a defining factor in how fulfilled we are as we work, play, and love, everyday of our lives.

These last couple of months have been hard for me, balancing time, or not really balancing it enough, between planning workshops, writing, family, and fun, but I believe that imbalance can be boiled down to one thing, I stopped reminding myself of the things that matter, everyday. So I thought there is no better way to remind myself than by writing them down, so here goes.

1. Family

They come at the top, everything I do, or should be doing, is for the betterment of my family. Becoming a better person, getting a better education, and living a life of happiness and fulfillment is to fuel their lives with every inch of positive energy I have, and see their smiles light up my life. At the end of the day the love of your family is the only thing that is consistent in life, no matter what you are going through a loving family will always be there for you, so make sure there is plenty of time in your day to be there for them.

2. Friends

I have been blessed with amazing friends and mentors. I have laughed and cried with people I know are going to be friends for life, who have been there for me when I needed them most, who hug me every time they see me, who lift me up, and who give me the chance to do the same for them in their time of need. Friends can make every experience so much richer, a richness that turns experiences into memories, memories that you can look back on your life with love and joy.

3. Health: Mind, Body and Soul

When I have a day that includes, prayer, meditation, nutritious food, and exercise, it increases my energy level ten fold, and I am talking about healthy, sustainable energy, not a caffeine or sugar rush.  When I live healthy, the health transfers itself into everything I do, my interactions with people are healthier, my level of focus more concentrated, there is a bounce to my step, and I sleep so much better. The last thing you want to be when you are older is unable to live an active life, and that all depends on the lifestyle you have today, so put that natural energy you have today to build energy for the future when you need it.

4. My Dreams

What do you really want to do? and I mean really want to do. Past the crowd of successful women and men, past the pressure society has on us, past the professionals definition of the word “professional”, what do you want to do that is going to give you a reason to wake up in the morning? I truly believe everybody has a specific calling in this world, something they can be remarkable at, and that is what I call professional, when someone follows their heart, becomes great at something they love, and instead of becoming a professional they have created their own profession. That is a beautiful thing.

Well there is my list of things that matter, like a to-do list I like to keep it short, three or four things at most, but I believe they cover every aspect of my life that gives me a sense of joy, fulfillment, and purpose. What does your list look like? Before you start checking your to-do list, write down your list of the things that truly matter to you, and then compare them. One of two things may happen, you will be surprised at how different they are, and realize the changes you need to make, or you will see the similarities and breathe.

Writing down your list of things that matter may take a little time out of your day, but if that means a better list for better moments, then a better list for better moments it is, and I wish you all the better moments this world has to offer.
